Rated R for sequences of disturbing terror and violence
From the director of Insidious comes the bone chilling bio based on the case files of the Warrens. Paranormal investigators Ed (portrayed brilliantly by Insidious vet Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (played by the lovely Bates Motel’s Vera Farmiga) have investigated thousands of cases but out of the thousands they investigated, there was one so disturbing, they never spoke about it to anyone. Until now.
James Wan who is known best for directing the greatfully gory Saw series and the newbie hit Insidious as well its follow up, is once again behind the camera, brilliantly capturing the terror and horror that goes bump in the night. Vera Farmiga really sold it! She was brilliant as ever and really is looking to win a Scream award if she keeps it up. The ghost, as well as the backstory was equally terrifying and spinechilling; (a witch who was said to have sacrifised her children to Lucifer and went on to curse her land, which went on to become a local crime scene dripping in blood.) Look I won’t go and spoil it for you but I will say this: it was the best horror film that I saw of 2013(well 1st , the second being Carrie and the third being World War Z and the fourth being Insidious Chapter 2.) As for the Warrens, the film contains an exorcism scene that is so frightening, that they could give the Winchester brothers and Castiel a run for their money.
The “based on true events” thing didn’t really have me buy it for a second. Then again I really haven’t brought the “based on true events” tag that came with every movie that came out over the years. But after my friend showed me a pic of the real life Ed and Lorraine Warren, I took it all back.
